It’s from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! where there is a discussion about replacing the PT-Cruiser steering wheel with one fr om a Neon SRT-4. The 2 steering wheels in question look like this:

Honestly, the PT wheel is kind of neat for the early 2000's .

I was going to say, I prefer the PT wheel.  20 years later it has actually aged fairly well.

Ahh, my favorite. A  comparison of two bad choices with no good answers

The outer door handles are also really nice with a really satisfying big button.

3-spoke wheels are the pointless trend for today. 4-spokes Uber Alles!

9 and 3 for sport; 5 and 7 for cruising.

Wrist on 12 for balling.

Boomerspeak:

“I like this thing! But I can’t accept that other people have opinions that don’t align with mine! And their opinions sometimes make me question my own tastes and preferences! So I state things as though they are facts in order to shut down dialogue about things that I am too tired to argue about!”

Yes, the exclamation points are necessary.

We’re talking about PT Cruisers here.  All of the moves are negative, except for the move where you never buy one to begin with.

Ha, don’t think so. It was a result of my Neon-related searching followed by some morbid curiosity .

That’s pretty morbid, my friend.

But I’ll let you in on a secret if you promise not to tell the rest.  I not only think the PT Cruiser isn’t a bad car, I think it’s kinda jalop in its own contrarian way.

Compared to pretty much everyone except some exotics and BMW, it’s aged very well.

It kind of reminds me of the Z8 steering wheel.

The fact that DaimerChrysler allowed their designers to spend money on a unique steering wheel, unique exterior door handles, and unique HVAC vents (among other pieces) on a cheap, entry level small car was a very unusual move for a domestic automaker at the time.

You were on a PT Cruiser forum? Was there a hit counter at the top?

Answer me this: was it listed as being part of a web ring?

Haha, it’s the standard forum template, but the URL is ptcruiserlinks.com, which sounds incredibly  modern.

It actually is pretty amazing, and they sold better than any Chrysler since (I did not research that claim). Kudos to them for trying something different. The interior is not really "good" but it's special.

Daimler wasn’t involved until 2006. The 1st-gen PTs were just a Chrysler product, designed by Brian Nesbitt, who left Chrysler around the same time Daimler acquired them, and got a sweeter gig by moving to GM/Chevy, creating the Chevy HHR, Chevy’s version of the PT. 1ST-Gen Cruisers are actually built well, especially 2003-2005. It’s the 2nd-gen Cruisers that are shit, because, although they were still selling, Daimler didn’t want to put any more money into them.

(Disclosure: I'm a "boomer", and I've owned 2 2004 PTs, and will, at some point, buy me a convertible within those years, at a decent price)

Daimler purchased Chrysler in 1998 and the PT Cruiser launched in 2000 for the 2001 model year, so they most certainly were involved. While the basic design itself was probably largely frozen in 1998/1999, there certainly were a lot of details left to meddle with. One of which was the actual badge on the car, since Chrysler Corp. had intended to sell it as a Plymouth, a brand Daimler immediately decided to phase out, causing it to become a Chrysler. Daimler sold a  controlling stake in Chrysler to Cerberus in 2007, so 2006 would have been the tail end of their involvement, not the beginning.

Chrysler-Plymouth dealers in Southern California had waiting lists for them because Toluca was struggling to keep up with demand.

Imagine, an affordably priced domestic brand car that was that hot in California, of all places. The only other domestic cars I can think of that achieved that sort of hype there in the past 30 years or so would maybe be Teslas, and those are pretty different animals.

It was the right product at the right time, and a big hit right when DCX really needed one. I suppose the trouble was that the novelty of the styling wore off once they were all over the place, and that Chrysler didn’t do enough to keep the car up with the times.

Yeah, the novelty thing is a blessing and a curse for a lot of cars that end up being a flash in the pan.

I enjoyed my PT. I would love to have enough cash (yes, I know they are cheap but  do not have the cash ) to buy another one, garage it and laugh all the way to the bank in 20 years when it becomes a classic.

A string of bad decisions has led me to owning a pile of neons (one being an SRT4) and a “touring edition” PT (non turbo). I plan on putting an SRT wheel in my PT because I hate the boat wheel so much.

It is a decent car to drive though and somewhat comfortable. It is currently the best $200 car I’ve ever bought.
